Online Training for First Responders

OPERATION SAFETY NET

OBJECTIVE:

Operation Safety Net is a specialized program designed to enhance First Responders’ ability to identify and interact more effectively with autistic individuals during emergency situations. By recognizing the unique needs of autistic individuals, this training supports improved communication, comfort, and outcomes during critical encounters.

This free, optional online course includes seven modules covering an introduction to autism, common traits, and practical strategies for engagement. The goal is to foster a proactive and compassionate approach—promoting safer, more inclusive communities for all.

We also include free downloadable resources available for autistic individuals and families. Please scroll down to access.

We believe that the ability to participate in our program should not be limited by budget constraints faced by first responder departments. That's why we proudly offer this program at no cost to ensure everyone can benefit. While donations are appreciated to help us sustain our efforts, participation remains free, allowing all departments to engage without financial barriers. Together, we can create a more inclusive environment for those we serve.

First Responder Autism Training

This program is on online course that aims to support first responders in enhancing their ability to identify characteristic signs of autism and employ effective approaches when interacting with individuals with autism. The program includes seven modules covering an introduction to autism, its traits, and strategies for engaging with those potentially affected by autism.

While we encourage every department to complete this training, it is not required to receive the sensory packs. You can find more information below.

Program Components

  • First responders participating in the program receive specialized training on how to effectively utilize the sensory bags when interacting with individuals with autism. This training covers topics such as autism awareness, sensory processing differences, de-escalation techniques, and communication strategies.

  • The program fosters collaboration between first responder agencies, autism advocacy organizations, and the community to ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of the initiative. Input from individuals with autism and their families is also valued to tailor the sensory bags to meet their specific needs and preferences.

  • The program is continuously evaluated and refined based on feedback from both first responders and individuals with autism and their families. This iterative approach ensures that the sensory bags remain relevant and responsive to the evolving needs of the community.

Benefits

  • The sensory bags facilitate more effective communication between first responders and individuals with autism, helping to reduce misunderstandings and promote positive interactions.

  • By providing sensory tools and resources, the program helps to mitigate sensory overload and anxiety for individuals with autism during emergency situations, promoting a sense of calm and security.

  • Equipping first responders with the necessary tools and training to effectively support individuals with autism enhances overall safety for both the individual and the responding personnel.

  • The program demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility within the community, fostering a culture of understanding and support for individuals with autism and other sensory processing differences.
